"Escuela Luz del Mundo" (ELM) or "Light of
the World School" strives to be a Christ-
centered, community-based school in the East
Central Avenue neighborhood of Albuquerque,
NM that intentionally strives to glorify
God by providing a rigorous, college-
preparatory education for low-income children.
"No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad
tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized
by its own fruit. People do not pick figs
from thornbushes, or grapes from briars."
- Luke (6:43-44)
The main priority at Escuela Luz del Mundo
(ELM) is that all members of our community
develop a personal relationship with our Lord
and Savior, Jesus Christ. As a Christ-centered
school, we believe that the personal relationship
that the Escuela Luz del Mundo community (e.g.,
staff and students) have with Jesus Christ
guides all that we are as a school. Furthermore,
we believe that the individual relationships
that staff and students at ELM have with
Christ forms and shapes our community's
relationship with Christ.
From this perspective, being a Christ-centered
school entails more than simply focusing
on teaching a "Christian curriculum." It means
challenging ourselves to live the teachings of
Christ on a daily basis. At Escuela Luz del
Mundo, we believe that "showing Christ" to
students entails being living examples of His
love that is embodied within us. This means
that all students, whether they are believers
or not will be loved at ELM. Through showing
our love for them, as Jesus loves us, we believe
that students will ultimately feel compelled
to choose to accept Christ Jesus in their
lives.
Escuela Luz del Mundo will initially
serve students in the middle school
grade-levels and then expand to also
serve the high school grade-levels.
The school will open in the Fall of
2007 with an initial cohort of 20-30
6th grade students. Sixth-grade cohorts
will also be recruited for the following
two subsequent years. In addition, students
will be recruited to matriculate at ELM
in grade-levels served (e.g. in Fall of
2008, 7th graders will also be recruited
to join the initial 2006 student cohort).
There is an application process that must
be completed to attend ELM. Priority for
acceptance will be given to low-income
students from the East Central Avenue
community. A student does not need to be
a Christian to be accepted to ELM. Financial
aid will be provided on the basis of need,
but every student's family will be required
to make some financial and/or time
contributions to ELM.
